Background and Activity within the Project
The Institute of Applied Magnetism in Madrid (IMA) is a research centre of the University Complutense of Madrid (UCM), co-sponsored by the Spanish Railway Company, focused on the study of magnetic materials and their applications, with large experience on technology transfer. The director is Prof. A. Hernando. IMA has facilities and experience for nanoparticle preparation by both physical (sputtering, laser ablation, mechanical milling) and chemical methods that will be exploited for preparing BONSAI magnetic NP. The IMA group will prepare Au and core shell metallic nanoparticles NP functionalised with organic molecules modifying the preparation parameters that control the NP final features (size, shape, surface bonding) by chemical routes that require basic chemical laboratory instruments and glove chambers. The structural features will be analyzed (XRD, AFM and HREM) as well as electronic configuration (EXAFS and XANES) and magnetic properties (SQUIQ and VSM magnetometry, MFM and, if possible, XCMD). All these facilities are available except synchrotron techniques which we are subjected to the acceptance of proposals or collaboration with groups with an easy access to these techniques (UNIPD). There will be 5 senior researchers and one postdoc involved in the project with the participation of two predoctoral students (one focused on NP preparation and structural analysis and other on the magnetic and optical properties) that will be involved full-time on this research and other two students expertise in some of the techniques used will involved part time. The group leader is Dr. M. A. Garcia.
