Background and Activity within the Project
The Department of Physics of the University of Padova (UNIPD) has a long time experience in the synthesis and characterization (structural, optical and magnetic) of nanocluster-based materials. The main activity of UNIPD inside BONSAI will be on the characterization of the materials. The techniques available at UNIPD are: XRD, TEM also in scanning mode (STEM) with analytical attachments as energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) and electron energy loss (EELS), SEM, Optical Lab for photoluminescence (PL), excitation PL (PLE), time resolved PL, and magneto-optical measurements. UNIPD will also be responsible for the coordination of the characterization tasks among the partners. The task leader is Prof. G. Mattei with well documented expertise in characterization of nanostructured metal and semiconductor materials. The collaboration with staff people at ESRF synchrotron radiation facility allows making EXAFS, GISAXS and magnetic dichroism measurements. Other activities of UNIPD will be aimed at: (i) cooperation with ENEA on the development of powders disaggregation protocols by mechanical and chemical routes and stabilization of colloidal suspension by surfactant agents; (ii) the synthesis of the colloidal solution of metallic nanoparticles by laser ablation and (iii) the modelling of the optical and magnetic properties of nanoclusters. The group is composed of 1 full professor, 1 associate professor, 2 researchers, 1 Post-doc and 3 Ph.D. students.
