Background and Activity within the Project

INFLPR (the National Institute for Laser, Plasma and Radiation Physics from Bucharest) is carrying out basic and applied research in the fields of lasers and lasers in material science, material processing, laser nano-technologies, biomedical applications, plasma and laser-surface interaction, thin film pulsed laser deposition, nonlinear optics, laser metrology, electron beam and space physics. The Laboratory of Laser photochemistry (leader Dr. Ion Morjan) is participating in the BONSAI project with well documented expertise on the synthesis of magnetic iron-based nanoparticles using the laser pyrolysis technique. Two senior researchers (Dr. R. Alexandrescu and Dr. I. Voicu) and four PhD students with experience in the preparation and characterization of nanoparticle gas-phase synthesis are involved in achieving the BONSAI tasks. Nanometric size iron oxides and iron-carbon nanocomposites will be produced and characterized by XRD and TEM. Using different irradiation geometries and sensitizers the mean particle diameter will be varied (between about 4 nm to about 10 nm). INFLPR provides gram quantities of selected magnetic nanopowders (nanoparticles and nanocomposites) to BONSAI partners for dispersion, colloid preparation and complex magnetic measurements. In the frame of BONSAI, INFLPR collaborates within WP2 for scaling up the process of the laser synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles.
